Statement to Our Members on the Recent Scottish Budget Announcement

Dear Members,

We hope this message finds you well. Following the announcement of the recent Scottish budget, we would like to share our initial reflections and outline the potential implications for the optometry sector.

Firstly, we want to acknowledge the hard work and collective efforts that have led to securing the 6% increase in General Ophthalmic Services (GOS) fees. This achievement is a testament to the persistent advocacy and dedication of our members. However, we must recognise that the broader budget context introduces certain challenges that may impact upon the sustainability of these gains.

Key Budget Highlights and Implications
The budget has pledged significant additional funding for the NHS, with a notable increase of £3.4 billion. While this signals a positive commitment, it is crucial for us to remain proactive in ensuring that primary eye care services receive appropriate support. The anticipated rise in operational costs, including the uplift in the National Living Wage, may offset some of the benefits from the GOS fee increase, potentially placing additional strain on practice resources.

Advocating for Optometry
Optometry Scotland is committed to representing the interests of our members and the optometry sector as a whole. We are actively engaging with the Scottish Government to reinforce the vital role of community optometry in delivering accessible and high-quality eye care. Our discussions will focus on ensuring that the increased NHS funding benefits optometry services.

We also aim to work closely with key stakeholders and professional bodies to amplify our voice. By emphasising the cost-effectiveness of community-based optometric care and its capacity to reduce the burden on secondary care, we believe we have a strong case for continued support.

A Positive Outlook
While we are mindful of the challenges ahead, we remain optimistic about the opportunities this budget presents. The commitment to additional NHS funding is a step in the right direction, and we will continue our efforts to advocate for the resources needed to support and sustain our profession.

We will keep you informed as developments unfold. To ensure that your views and concerns are represented please get in touch with us if you have any feedback.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication.
