Optometry Scotland and Visibility Scotland set up a joint initiative to offer virtual access to a support group that provided help and support for people living with low vision during the 2020 pandemic.
The group incorporated an optometrist and a dispensing optician who provided expert help and advice to service users, and was facilitated by a member of staff from Visibility Scotland.
The meetings were arranged and facilitated by Visibility Scotland virtually and included groups of various sizes, from single service users to groups of a maximum of four.
There was an opportunity for the participants to talk to the experts on all aspects of their eye conditions and benefit from useful tips about living with low vision.
The service users were also able to engage with one another and gain from others’ experiences.
Between April and September 2020, the service engaged with 55 service users through a variety of engagement methods – WhatsApp, teleconference or zoom video call. A majority of meetings were held by teleconference as all the patients had access to telephones; however some service users preferred Zoom. In instances where there were areas of special interest or questions or queries to be investigated, we followed up with service users following the sessions.
