Ian Jarvis, principal optometrist and owner of Jarvis Optometrist in Dundee
We caught up with Ian Jarvis, a member of OS’s Executive Committee and independents representative for members in Tayside.
The height of the COVID pandemic was one of the busiest periods the OS Executive has experienced as it worked to liaise with the Scottish Government and to assist members, holding weekly virtual meetings to navigate the challenges.
Ian discussed the benefits of having built a strong relationship with the Scottish Government ahead of this unprecedented period.
He said: “The positive dialogue that OS has had over the years meant that the Scottish government listened to our needs. This resulted in a lot of very positive developments that helped during the pandemic, with long term advantages.
“The average payments, inclusion in the PPE supply chain and access to emergency care summary were three examples which helped the profession to function through the pandemic and beyond.”
More recently, Ian has assisted OS in discussions with Scottish universities about plans (resulting from the GOC’s educational strategic review) to update the Optometry degree to a five year Masters degree which would incorporate the current pre-registration placement.
Outside of his OS role, Ian has been busy with the backlog of routine eyecare at his Dundee practice, but he’s set to get a helping hand. He is proud to be welcoming his son John Jarvis onto the team following the completion of his pre-reg year, where he’ll be a great new asset to the practice as it handles the increased capacity.
