Children’s Eye Health
It is important that the health of your child’s eyes is checked regularly, just like going to the doctor or dentist. Most children have excellent eyesight and do not need to wear spectacles. Optometry Scotland recommends that children get their first eye examination at three years of age, however if there is any family history of eye issues or parents are concerned about problems with their child’s vision, they can be seen earlier.
If there is a problem with your child’s eyesight it is important that it is picked up as early as possible so that the eyes and visual pathways develop normally. Some children may have vision screening carried out at nursery or school. This can detect eye problems, but is not as thorough an eye examination as is carried out by your optometrist.
